OSWEGO, N.Y. – Ted Winkworth is the alcohol and other drug program coordinator at Oswego State. He is a graduate of the University at Buffalo with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a graduate of Syracuse University with a master’s degree in community mental health counseling. He even studied psychology at Oswego State for a year during his undergraduate studies. Now he is about to begin a journey that will be a new and exciting departure from the norm.

As the alcohol and other drug program coordinator, Winkworth works with the Lifestyles Center in drug and alcohol prevention at the university, and has been doing that for about three and a half years. However, Winkworth will be leaving his position at Oswego State after the end of this semester in order to embark on an intercontinental motorcycle tour.

Grad rates low in U.S.

OSWEGO, N.Y. – A recent report released by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation found that 46 percent of American college students do not graduate within six years of enrollment.

Dr. Elizabeth Schmitt, a professor in the department of economics at Oswego State, disputed the number given by this report due to some flaws in the collection of this data.

“Data that tracks full-time college students across their institutions (including transfer students) found a six-year graduation rate of 77 percent,” Schmitt said. “Overall completion rates are about 54 percent, but that includes part-time students that do have much lower graduations rates. This also gives us a clue as to the factors that lead to non-completion: life gets in the way. Part-time students are likely to face higher financial and scheduling challenges (family, job, military) that make it difficult to finish.”

Degree Works to replace CAPP

OSWEGO, N.Y. – At some point during the 2013 spring semester, Oswego State will be discontinuing its use of the CAPP Degree Audit program. CAPP is the program that the university currently employs to allow its students to view their progress toward earning their degrees.

The new, high-performance program that Oswego State will be switching over to is called Degree Works, and it is being implemented SUNY-wide. Oswego State is among the first of the SUNY schools to switch to the new program. The CUNY system has begun using Degree Works, as well as most of the universities in Georgia.

OSWEGO, N.Y. – This semester Oswego State opens its arms in welcome to Garrick Utley, an esteemed broadcast journalist and the newest member of the School of Communications, Media and the Arts faculty.

Garrick Utley has done everything an aspiring broadcast journalist could ever hope to accomplish in their career. He has led a full life, accomplishing a lot over a relatively short span of time.
